The Best of Bristol Bay Fishing
Lodge Alaska is ideally located on the Naknek River, allowing easy access to the entire Bristol Bay watershed. From the Wild Trout Management Area around Lake
Iliamna to the catch-and-release waters of Katmai National Park, daily flights (weather permitting) in a 6-passenger DeHavilland Beaver will take you to the best Bristol Bay
fishing sites. Our pilots have served these remote waters for over 25 years. Some of our favorite destinations include:
Kvichak River. With rainbow trout that can be over 30 inches long and may exceed 10 pounds in weight, the Kvichak River is home to Alaska's largest rainbow
trout. One reason these trout grow so big is the steady diet of salmon. In spring, trout feed on three-inch salmon smolt as they migrate to the ocean. In summer, they
consume salmon eggs that drift away from nests. In fall, the decaying flesh of spawned-out salmon provides abundant food. The result is a healthy population of trophy
rainbow trout.
We fly to the Kvichak River then fish from boats.
Nushagak River. The Nushagak River has the largest run of King salmon in Alaska, with return numbers ranging from about 150,000 to 250,000
annually. With so many fish in the river, it's possible to hook and land many of these 20-60 pound ocean-fresh salmon in a single day.
We fly to the Nushagak River then fish from boats.
Alagnak River. The Alagnak River was the first river in Alaska to be designated a National Wild and Scenic River. We offer a scenic float of this
section for our non-fishing guests. For our fishing guests, we visit the upper river to fish for rainbows and the lower river to fish for salmon.
We fly
to the Alagnak River then fish from the shore and/or the boat.
Brooks River. Located within Katmai National Park, Brooks River is where bears are known to fish for salmon. The river also provides excellent
catch-and-release rainbow trout fishing for us.
We fly or boat to the Brooks River then fish from shore.
American Creek and Moraine Creek. These remote clear-water streams within Katmai National Preserve hold the large rainbow trout for which this area
is famous.
We fly to American and Moraine creeks then fish from shore.
Naknek River. Our home water is the Naknek River, accessible by boat so that we have excellent fishing even on days we can't fly. The Naknek is home to large
rainbow trout, arctic char, and grayling, as well as all five of Alaska's native salmon species: kings, sockeyes, silvers, pinks, and chums. The proximity of the Naknek to the
ocean waters of Bristol Bay means that the salmon have just begun their freshwater journey to their home streams to spawn. The salmon on the Naknek are bright and
strong, ocean-fresh. We don't have to fly anywhere for the best of Bristol Bay fishing: we just like to!
All fishing excursions are fully guided with one licensed professional guide for every two guests. We provide all equipment, including rods, reels, waders, and lures, though
you may bring your own, if you prefer. We welcome fishing novices and seasoned anglers, fly fishers and spin fishers. We personalize our daily trips to meet the needs,
interests, and abilities of our guests.
Whether you have a few days or a week to fish, we invite you to enjoy the best of Bristol Bay fishing with a Lodge Alaska fishing vacation package.
