The Best of Bristol Bay Bear Viewing

Renowned for its brown bear population and bear-viewing opportunities, Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park attracts visitors from around the world. From Lodge Alaska, you can access the Falls via a 1-hour cruise across Naknek Lake or a 20-minute float plane ride.

From mid-May to early July, before the salmon run peaks, bears can be found feeding on sedges and roots in grassy meadows and digging clams at low tide. From July to September, as salmon return from the ocean to spawn in their native freshwater streams, bears move into the river to fish, vying for the best spots. Even as the salmon runs taper off in the fall, bears, now round and sleek in new winter coats, continue to feed on the fish after they have spawned.
